Double LP
Huerco S' Brain Leeds re-engages the Loidis name for the debut album I thought we'd never see. The first and up-to-now only Loidis record was an incredible 12" issued via Anno just before the shop opened in 2018, a subtly propulsive three track collection of Chain Reaction-styled minimalist dub techno that I still come back to now on the weekly. With how busy Leeds has remained with his other projects, I feared it might only be a one-off detour, but One Day is evidence there's plenty more inspiration to be found down this path for the American producer. In short, One Day is like that first 12" flipped from 33 to 45, a slightly more animated, micro-detailed ascent into deep house dynamics and dubby realms. Chain Reaction remains the gold standard touchstone throughout, trace elements of those hyper-immersive early Substance and Fluxion 12s present from minute one, while you wouldn't doubt that Leeds has spent some time with the Comatonse catalogue. If the influences are apparent, so is Leeds' own signature touch - this is called Loidis and not Huerco S or Pendant, but it's still unmistakably one man at the wheel, the magic present in those detailed little textures he's always manage to weave into his music, a kind of decaying ambience that channels the complex interface of the melancholic with the euphoric. Didn't think much would pass that Skee Mask LP this year, but Loidis might well have gone one better. Suns out, the big guns are out. Essential might just cover it.
