Logos - Imperial Flood

Have long-considered 'Atlanta 96' from Logos 2013 debut one of the better tracks to emerge from the post-Burial/grime landscape, and the material he's been banging out with Mumdance through his own label these past few years has expanded on that brilliantly, pushing out into odd, unusual sonic terrain without being overly abstract or wilfully difficult. So it's great to finally see a follow up to Cold Mission, greater still that Logos might have even bettered it on Imperial Flood. The ghosts of first wave grime are all present and correct (think Slaugher Mob, Plasticman etc), and like on Cold Mission those icey synth stabs are stretched out into some seriously bleak sounding ambient passages that conjour such a clear sense of London under night you wonder if this would make much sense anywhere else. Where Imperial Flood states its difference is in its more explorative moments, reaching past grime as its blueprint and into the hidden outerzones of dub ,techno, jungle, sounding absolutely and perfectly tar black and distopic. To that end, it reminds me most of Sandwell District and Raime, even that Yally 12" from last year. Not music for these approaching long, bright nights, but it's always 3am somewhere and especially so in my cold dead heart. Yeah, I like this one a lot.
