OUT JANUARY 16
Jasmine Butt (credited here as Guests) and Amos Childs from Jabu unite with Teresa Winter and Birthmark for what proves a great advert for the value of community and shared understandings that runs through certain aspects of the UK underground. Recorded in Bristol way back in September 2023 while Winter was on tour, these four tracks of languid, dreamstate improvisations are now deservedly presented to a wider audience and suggest the four should get together more regularly. The voices of Butt and Winter coalesce with a profound ease, smoky, sometimes heavenly glossolalia of coos and sighs blooming and then fading around a kind of sunken chamber song divined from gently strummed guitars and eerie drones. Though certainly less song-oriented than Jabu's usual output, there are nonetheless obvious through-lines to their manifestation of post-shoegaze ambience and certainly a little summoning of classic Kranky aesthetics. That this was all done in a single take in a single session is great testament to the instincts of all involved. With such things, there's a temptation to imagine what-if of more time and purpose, but in and of itself, this is a beautiful document of tacit union.
