Mønic - Trawler Tapes

First time vinyl pressing collecting together Simon Shreeve's two Trawler Tapes releases from 2020. Shreeve has a history of skirting the margins of modern techno, both industrial and dub-aligned, and has turned out some notable remixes for Burial and Regis, the latter of whom has thrown his hat in the ring by issuing this collection through his Downwards imprint. Trawler Tapes leaves that aspect of Shreeve's music behind, instead embracing zoned-out, near-beatless subaquatic ambience. It's a shift not without precedent - think Basic Channel into Chain Reaction, Porter Ricks to Mille Plateaux. In fact, the press release cites Thomas Koner a few times, and it makes sense, though it's certainly not limited to that - Markus Popp and Wolfgang Voight's droning, texturally rich minimalism is certainly alive and well here, too. As enveloping as it is, it's not so much an immersive experience as submersive, deep sub-bass tonality that plays like submarines drifting in slow-motion synchronicity. Would have missed this were it not for Downwards bringing it to print, and grateful i am for it, too. Edition of 300.
