MIDDEX - Perpetual Skip

Latest collection of DIY concrete/outsider electronics from all round good egg Kevin Hendrick under his MIDDEX moniker. Alongside stints in other notable outfits, Hendrick has been developing his work as MIDDEX for some time now, though to my ears Perpetual Skip feels like a definitive moment. There's an obviously primitive, industrial quality to these recordings that brings to mind early ClockDVA, Bourbonese Qualk, John Bender et al, clearly rock solid reference points worthy of anyone. Remember though, it's a lot harder to get this kind of thing right than you might assume given its fairly rudimentary ingredients - there's little more on show here than a few drum machines, synthesisers, tape loops and dulcet vocal. And of course, the most important ingredient is Hendrick himself. Here he's nailed a compelling mix of the metallic, acidic and deadpan, a compelling unspooling of a life spent deep in the mire of very specific sections of a record shop, and with a magpie eye/ear for humour that's buried in the bleak. High grade margin walking.
