Hats off to Daisart for the name. The cryptic double meaning of the title is a perfect introduction to a collection of ambient experimentalism that shifts between ethereal melancholy and ambiguous possibility. Sourced from a host of obscure(d) artists all operating in what might loosely be described as the 'post-rave' era circa 1993-2008, these 14 tracks explore the liminal spaces and imagined dreamworlds of ambient or 'chill-out' music through the lesser-explored lens of Australian experimental music. We're used to hearing this kind of thing in a European context, though there's evidence here that the sensibility was a universal one, and Daisart themselves have spoken about how this music, in its textless exploration of sound worlds, can be instructive in understanding complex Australian identity. Which is interesting, because what's most notable is how this doesn't play like 14 different artists, more a series of iterative explorations of aesthetic from the same hive mind, be that electro-acoustic new age, proto-glitch, layered fourth-world electronics or ethereal drone.
