We've a small re-stock of this absolutely essential comp from late 2017, which I was recently reminded of following the Still In Your Arms collection A Colourful Storm issued a few weeks back. The thematic artwork disguises two very different selections - here Bayu & Moopie reflect the indiepop (as opposed to electronic) arm of ACS, compiling an obscure set of sometimes heavy hearted, sometimes spiky DIY jangle gold. The tracks by the more familiar names here (The Cat's Miaow, Even As We Speak, The Cannanes) are among your writer's favourite songs ever - honestly, if you know of a song possessed of a greater sense of kitchen sink desire than 'Not Like I Was Doing Anything', then slide into those DMs with the goods please. But as with the best compilations, it's also about the songs you didn't know, and connecting the dots and drawing lines with the ones you do to create a wider understanding of value, sensibility, or dare i say it, scene! Two huge standouts for me are The Pearly Gatecrashers 'In The Summer', the equal of any Heavenly song i've heard, and Hydroplane's 'Completed Extract...', which starts with Blueboy-like solemnity and ends in a haze of static that's proto Flying Saucer Attack. A perfect compilation.
