I'd speculate that right now Townes Van Zandt is more famous than he's ever been. Not sure why it's taken so long, but the current moment does seem to be in his favour what with the reissue of Heartworn Highways, the general renewed interest in 'outlaw country' and the cowboy life, Red Dead Redeption, that incredible film The Rider... As such, Sky Blue couldn't be any better timed.
What you get with these eleven songs is nine stripped back versions of both TVZ standards and deepcuts, and more crucially, two never before heard tracks. The hardcore fans will mostly be here for the latter, and they do represent Townes at his intimate, heartbroken best. The title track in particular is a true delight, and does beg the question of how and why it was obscured for so long. More still, it makes you wonder what else is being sat on, lost to time... Released on what would have been Townes Van Zandt's 75th birthday. Put this on, pour youself a fifth, and wake up in someone else's clothes. It's what he would have wanted.
