Excellent Aotearon zine, What Lies Beneath, crosses over to the other side of the counter with this series of three exceptionally limited lathe cut 7"s doucmenting three of the key players in the current DIY underground. All should be at least partially familiar names to anyone who frequents these pages, the kind of guitar-based transgressions WLB author Simon Baker has long dedicated time to. Stefan Christensen's 7 splits the difference between his usual two concerns - on the A we get a heavy-hearted folk-derived lament, and on the B something a little gnarlier, all stormy squall and static death. The Japan-based Australian duo Greymouth unite their past and present with a pair of tracks that embrace noise, improv and Japanese folk song tradition to compelling and unpredictable effect, while Benedict Quilter's P Wits project amps up the dissonance in typically confrontational manner. All in all a fitting continuation of NZ/Aotearon lathe cut tradition, embracing and giving room to the experimental and obtuse, and uniting complimentary voices.
