Shitgaze is back! Did it ever go away? Not in this house. I've enjoyed most things on Radical Documents of late, but this one really blindsided me, mainly because it's so instant and melodic and - erm - 'song-based' (all things being relative). As i understand it, the story goes that a mysterious, uncredited package containing all of these songs was delivered to the label alongside some sparse cryptic information re how it was made: "Recorded 2007-2019 in Beaverton, Oregon on a Tascam 424. NO COMPUTERS WERE USED TO CREATE THIS MUSIC". So as it currently stands, i've no idea who the/se Midnight Steppers might be, but what's here is some fantastically murky n moody guitar-crunching lo-fi that's as thrillingly insolent as these kinds of things should be. Imagine the late great Eat Skull on downers, monotone mope and gloom wrapped in a big duvet of scuzz. Impossible to pick a highlight here, because it's all about tone (which is black and blue obviously). A mighty dispatch from the eternally lonesome imagined American Notown, where those great highways and vast expanses of in-between are an endless source of inspiration. The good old American underground.
