A slew of delights from Albert's Basement landed late last week, chief amongst them this six song cassette of unreleased archival recordings from the wondrous Elli & Bev, released at the tail end of 2021. I know little of the duo aside from that that one 12", Might Not Look Like It To You (which we've also in stock now btw), released back in 2014. A cursory search online sadly reveals that Karl Von Bamberger, one half of the pair, passed in 2016, making these recordings their last recorded output, which obviously lends an emotional weight to the whole affair. It's fitting tribute to Von Bamberger that these songs have found their way into the wider world, since there's a good few people out there that'll be duly moved by this stuff - we're talking Anne Clarke/Chris Knox/Flaming Tunes/Kitchen Cynics DIY action with a strong sense of the perverse. Folk-y, synth-y, lo-fi and as melodic as it is atonal, a deep precursor to a lot of the new music we're championing now. Listen to this alongside Warm Currency and the throughline draws itself. Necessary and much appreciated work from Albert's Basement in putting this into the world.
