She found herself drawn towards the pairing of skeletal piano phrasing with spare, rich bursts of vocal harmony. A series of stark songs emerged, minimal and vulnerable, woven with emotive silences. Inspired by “the idea that something is missing or cold,” the pieces float and fade like vignettes, implying as much as they reveal. She describes them as “small texts hanging in space,” impressions of mortality, melody, and the unseen – fleeting beauty, interrupted. Grid Of Points stands as a concise and potently poetic addition to the Grouper catalog.

Grid Of Points is a set of songs for piano and voice. It's a loose concept album about espionage, the Chinese Communist revolution, and dream associations, with the more stream-of-consciousness lyrics beginning to resemble the sorts of random connections made in dream states. We've been fans for a while, but this might just be her defining moment thus far. The Ogran Dirges record from last year offers some precedent to what's going on here - the organ remains Malone's focus, her compositions directed by the dense and enveloping timbres the instrument allows. It calls to mind Mary Jean Leach's Pipe Dreams from 1984, and Reich stands as an obvious touchstone, but it's a little reductive (no shit pun intended) to consider this as simply a continutation of the minimal tradition. These pieces of music are almost too vast to be described as minimal, widescreen and heavy in a way that speaks in someway to the outer reaches of Scandinavian metal, and intuitive in a pagan folk like manner key to the history of her homeland. But I’ve never had a great deal of luck with the Bruton catalogue. By this I mean I’ve never stumbled across a massive stash, or lucked-out buying a huge run for practically nothing – I say this as that’s the kind of thing that used to happen in the 1990s and the early noughties if you were out there looking hard for library music. But I did get about 25 in one hit about 20 years ago when the BBC shut down their “TV Training Department” near Lime Grove and a box of Brutons ended up being dumped at a hospital radio, and they didn’t want the records, so I got a call.

Over the years I’ve been buying any Bruton LPs as and when they pop up. There are lots of them about – over 330 LPs in the vinyl catalogue, issued between 1978 and 1985. I have to say that they do look really good on a shelf, simply because of their colour coded spines. Many of mine can be seen in a classic “rainbow” spread from the book Dust & Grooves (published 2014) when this guy came around and took pictures of my library records and put them in his book. Have a look on pages 156 and 157.

Anyway, for many years the “trophies” from the Bruton catalogue have been the beat or action driven LPs – the two Drama Montage albums (BRJ2 and BRJ8) have always been the big hitters, and others such as High Adventure (BRK2) too.

But I always found myself drawn to the lime green LPs, the pastoral, peaceful albums (The BRDs), which were full of the kind of gentle, lovely music that would turn up in Take Hart as Tony was painting a woodpecker or a badger or an Autumn tree. The other Brutons I liked were the orange ones (The BRIs) simply because they were full of experimental futuristic electronics and would remind me of 1980s ITV backgrounds. This series includes Brian Bennett’s cosmic classic Fantasia (BRI 10). Myself and fellow library collector Martin Green would refer to this style of music as “Krypton Factor library”, because it’s exactly what that strange but successful TV quiz show sounded like.

In recent years as interest in library music has expanded, I’ve watched the number of original cheap (£5) Bruton LPs for sale fall away, and the prices of many rise. If you ask me, many of these library music LPs are simply not worth the daft money that is often fished for on-line. Yes, they are quite rare and non-commercial, but people seem to forget that these library LPs are not really made for normal LP usage or listening – they were never made to be put on like rock or pop or jazz LPs with a journey or artist’s message as part of the experience. No, they are made as working LPs - you are supposed to pull them out when you are in the middle of a production, needle-drop and see what track might be useful for your comedy, quiz show or space cop drama, dub it off then put the LP back. Many original library LPs may have one or possibly two tracks that are a modern day revelation, but to get to those you often have to skip past many less interesting compositions. Very few library LPs offer up consistent modern day musical ride.

Anyway, I digress. What I’ve certainly noticed recently is the price of a handful of Brutons really going through the roof - not the action and drama ones, but the more esoteric and experimental LPs – like the BRDs and the BRIs. I get the vibe that people finally want to hear this other more interesting and experimental side of the Bruton catalogue. So what better time than now to put together a compilation of such sounds.

Not only does this album bring together a set of fabulous cues that would cost the average man in the street a month’s wages (if the originals were all wanted), but it also chops out the need to listen to other tracks that are nowhere near as good.

The cues here all date from between 1978 and 1984. For someone new to his work, the selection of tracks appear to have been sequenced in a fairly unconventional manner, taking Crelier's score to a story about a French missionary's trip to Mali in the 19th Century as its focus point, and annotating it, so to speak, with a series of interludes and ambient diversions. Fine as they are, the original score is the very obvious highlight here, certainly substantial enough to stand on its own. Midori Takada's Mkwaju Ensemble provides a solid point of reference, sharing the same polyrhythmic focus and respectful marrying of traditions. Crelier is clearly trying to capture an authentic impression of Mali and that sincerity is reflected in a score that is both energetic and graceful. Though well intended i'm sure, the press release talks of 'exoticism' and 'otherness', which does sit uneasily when expressed in a white European context and i'd be a little reluctant to think of this music as anything other than a homage to a much wider cultural experience. Nonetheless, Crelier is a masterful composer whose work deserves to be heard, and anyone who enjoys Reich, Glass, Takada, Music from Mills crew et al should take a deep dive here.

Caught somewhere between environmental sound studies and surrealist sonic architecture, SUGAI KEN helps mark the 30th release of Field Records with an ambitious new album. Opening with a feather-light Vini Reilly-like eight-minute John Martyn cover that once again channels the folk song influence that underpins a great deal of the Forlag For Fri Musik output, Sånger Till En Människa might be considered an archetypal Discreet release, splitting the difference between the cult-y hymnals of Blod and Enhet For Musik, and the abstracted and often uneasy ambience of Arv & Miljo. Though generally much longer compositions, the patchwork quality and repeated motifs of these five songs also echo the episodic Astrid Oster Mortensen LP from earlier this year, enveloping field recording, tape static, spoken word and occasional bursts of melody into one rich tapestry. There's certainly a continuation of that shared avant sensibility that seems to colour all those within the Discreet orbit, though it is also telling that Trollius has cited Razorcuts as an influence, shifting the context a little with it. Indiepop isn't an obvious touchstone, but the gentle jangle radiance of Koltrast is a palette cleansing delight, like how Skygreen Leopards used to submerge perfect popsongs within psych-drone noise abstraction. Think Vladimir Ussachevsky, Todd Dockstader, Spectre and Company Flow melted thru the Deutsch-Italo industrial DIY tape era and funneled thru an almost impenetrable fog of Ann Arbor basement noizze. Hustling some of Neotantrik’s most amorphous gestures, ’241014’ is a four-segment movement of reduced Buchla treatments, destroyed vinyl loops and scraping foley suspense; like a cosmic dream diary layered into a collage of drones and clatters. Little in Ciani’s extensive catalogue has hinted at what’s on display here; the joyful lullaby-pop of “Seven Waves” or metallic alien soundscraping of “Flowers of Evil” are only hinted at. She instead paints new sonic vistas, allowing space for her collaborators to make themselves known; Votel’s chiming toy autoharp and Bubul Tarang (a Punjab string instrument) add a distinctive flavor, while Canty’s grimy drones and noise-soaked textures drizzle pitch-black molasses into the cracks and crevices. Together, the effect is a bit like hearing Philip Jeck improvising over Popol Vuh’s peerless Moog-led debut “Affenstunde” or Demdike Stare knocking out impromptu reworks of Tangerine Dream’s abstrakt early run.Perhaps unusually, the trio have still never set foot in a studio together, exclusively maintaining their practice in-the-moment and on stage when schedules intersect. So it’s all the more remarkable that their improvisations naturally find a democracy of role and such a heightened level of intuition, beautifully converging their thoughts to mutual, open-ended conclusions that leaves billowing room for interpretation. In a most classic sense, it’s like the sensation of sleep paralysis or dream/nightmare ambiguity, with a level of suggestiveness that’s disorienting from end to end.For the first time the recordings are now available in high fidelity (there was a tape version a couple of years back) - now remastered by Rashad Becker to better represent the otherworldly scope of their actions on stage, from the NWW-like queues and drone of ‘Scanned Accents’ and keening silhouette of ‘Second Action,’ to new sections of subaquatic Porter Ricks-like murk in ‘Anti-Contraction’ and the levitating webs of synth and tactile, sampled textures in ‘Last Canción.’ Tape music and synth music have long shared a passionate embrace, and here turntablism coolly slides in on the action. Canty and Votel’s background in beat tape assembly and crate digging pays off: they’re keenly experimental creators but bring an unfussy sense of rhythm and performance that’s miles beyond any facile repetition of a nostalgia for vintage glory. Combined with Ciani’s delicate Buchla work - it's a unique proposition.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0051/1380/6921/products/Neotantrik_SuzanneCiani_AndyVotelandSeanCantyofDemdikeStare_-241014.jpg?v=1625155443
tibor-szemzo-arbo-x
Tibor Szemzo - Arbo X

An unexpected and brilliant return from the veteran Hungarian avant garde artist, ARBO X is a newly realised composition of work originally recorded for a film he directed back in 2006. What they each contribute is not necessarily obvious, but their work does seem effortless and natural, defined by that always impressive ability to infuse abstract electronics with palpable emotion and depth. The work with Gendel was ostensibly jazz-rooted for obvious reasons, though Bliss Place is, broadly speaking, more at home within the West Mineral/Experiences Ltd/Sferic world of contemporary electronics, reimagining the multi-layered, texture-driven aesthetics of the Mille Plateaux/Clicks and Cuts sound. 'Time-dilating' is a term we seem to be using a lot at the moment, and i think the strength of Bliss Place is the mastering of that origin-less sound style of composition whereby the tracks don't so much start and end as appear, these ghostly, sedimentary pieces that seem both densely packed and weightless, and possessed of no discernible root. Interestingly enough, these nine songs, which clock in at a teasingly short 35 minutes (Harris has a way of manipulating space and time within her songs), are said to have been written at various points over the past 15 years. That's a large proportion of Harris' creative life spent next to the water, which gives reason for perhaps the most emotionally open and direct Grouper collection to date. If there was once The Man Who Died in His Boat, maybe Shade is the woman stood alone waiting on the shore? Some of the songs are foggy and embedded in static hiss, yet some are also unadorned and clear, like, say, Maxine Funke or how Chan Marshall used to. First off, there's a lot of music here - close to 70 minutes in fact. The opening two tracks are imposingly long ambient excursions with pointedly emotive and ambiguous titles in a way that suggests Leeds is targeting some other grander, emotional narrative, not unlike The Caretaker. Beautifully textured and unhurried, this is pretty much where i'd expect to find a Pendant record, expanding on that sensational debut that introduced the whole WM universe. Where To All Sides... pushes new ground is in its final third, and suggests Leeds has spent serious time studying the insectoid micro-detail oddness of Ben Bondy and Mister Water Wet. The Story of My Ancestor the River has an almost free jazz like quality, disruptive and arresting in a way that makes a mockery of the ambient tag. That it's positioned right in the middle of the record suggests that's entirely intentional, as if daring the listener to make false assumptions. The real highpoint, though, is the 18 minute closer, Sometimes I Go About Pitying Myself While I Am Carried By The Wind Across The Sky, which reads like an Explosions in the Sky title but possesses an eerie rattlesnake-like hiss that perfects that great trick of confusing the natural with the synthetic - where does the one end and the other start? With these track name, we're in a similar space to Claire Rousay's emo-ambient experimentation, though Leeds seems less persona-driven in his work, favouring the ambiguous but leaving enough clues to suggest some other meaning, not unlike those long form Burial tracks from a few years back. Alvin’s piece — a homage to the location of the house in which he recorded “I am sitting in a room” back in 1969 — continues his study into slow-moving glissandi and carefully crafted beating patters by interweaving three string players within a minor third (voiced by two vibraphonists). The result is entrancing, almost psychedelic, and opens space where one didn’t expect. His piece asks the cellist to sustain pitches for extended durations — at times quietly singing in close proximity to the stopped pitch coming from the cello — while the rest of the ensemble (violin, viola, and 2 percussion) voice a sequence of chords separated by notated silences. The cello voice is sometimes alone, but never for too long as it finds itself supported from both the top and bottom in a harmonic embrace. Well, there's no surprise there - i've long thought a religious aspect to underpin much of the recorded output of Gustaf Dicksson, whether as parody, critique or outright reverence. It's hard to determine just what the intention is on Pilgrimssånger, though i'm going to receive these songs on face value and read them as a sincere rechanneling of the aesthetics of religious community and engagement, albeit it with a little art school provocation residing just under the surface. The church is an inherently complex entity, and not speaking Swedish i've little insight as to whether that's something that Dicksson is choosing to pick apart or not. The text accompanying the record notes that the Blod approach has often been to examine "beautiful things in generally ugly contexts," though i also wonder if that could be viewed the other way around? Leaving that meaning hanging in the air is part of the appeal, and i will say that there's an uncanny aspect to a number of these folk-referencing melodies and hymns, some of which seem to contain the possibility of modern pop song within them - there's a few famous melodies i swear i can hear, though i continue to struggle to determine just what they are. It could be coincidence, it could be part of the strange uneasy, cult-y ambience Dicksson has long seemed to pursue. And if that's not got you intrigued enough, Loopsel's Elin Engstrom turns up on vocals, a reason in itself to investigate. Not much music like this coming from anywhere else right now, which can only speak to the value of having a band like Blod around. Gast++. So far so intriguing. Somehow, A Selection of Improvisations delivers more than might be anticipated from such origins. We've a double disc containing ten outer-zone compositions that straddle the line between late 90s afterhours ambience - situated somewhere broadly within the Gas/Basinski/Oval axis - the minimalist composition of the Lovely Music/Obscure canons, and the emotional richness of the Music From Memory universe of airy electronics. Heavyweight business, then. Granted, we do seem to discuss music of this kind a fair bit, but there's a real allure to Kulk's approach that's as equally indebted to its masterful poise as it is its shadowy origins. A bit of mystery goes a long way when you're making sounds as vaporous and cloudless as this, but there's also real substance here, evidence of a smart composer adept enough to extract a rich timbre of emotion from what is a mostly minimalist approach. With elements mostly sourced from tape recordings made in and of her local laundromat, it still stands out as a remarkably contemporary feeling work; more like a post-Fisher, post-hauntology observation of urban life from the last decade, taking the ambient temperature and undercurrent pressures of the 90s. Neuro-defragmentation steps away from advanced technologies and heavily processed synthetic sounds in an un-compressed attempt to re-ignite a connection with nature we all possess. This is achieved by compiling un-quantised, organically textured music that is created using the human hand, rather than reliance on auto-modulation and drawn in lines. Timing is left to flow based on the artists own clock rather than the DAW’s. Automation is carved by hand creating fluid, organic but mathematically imperfect sculptures. Textures are left un-gated reflecting the constant background noise we sub-consciously experience in life. These approaches to music creation caused activation of my parasympathetic nervous system, restoring autonomic function to homeostatic levels. Evidence suggests glymphatic system clearance is promoted via re-synchronisation of disrupted circadian rhythms, reducing neurotoxicity and therefore cognitive degradation. Finally in wax, it’s Lukas De Clerck’s musical vehicle for his explorations with the aulos, that ancient reed instrument that mainly satyrs and archeological enthusiasts found beguiling. Equipped with his handmade pipes and the artful sense of devotion of a true modern-day aulete, De Clerck has dug deep into the technical and cultural peculiarities of this long-silenced instrument, paying it the kind of attention and mindfulness that Marsyas the satyr so lacked when he challenged Apollo and his lyre to that ill-fated musical match. But beyond merely resuscitating an ancient cult, De Clerck as Bloedneus gives the aulos a different kind of renaissance where its penetrating qualities are expanded and expounded to effects worth every nosebleed, paving new grounds in these practices of old.

MILLI MILLE hints at mysteries universal to humans of yore, present and morrow, like a Joseph Campbellesque recounting of transcendental journeys through drones and extra reverb. Elegiac modes encounter pastoral vibes that are punctuated by sly baroque flourishes, all pointing to the timelessness of the aulos’s sound - one can easily imagine its power of enlightenment through many ages. Yet in MILLI MILLE, an insistence on the fickleness of the instrument surfaces through disorienting, perception-shifting blasts and a compulsion to push the aulos to its fullest and most destabilizing potential. This is the flavor that Bloedneus & de Snuitkever imbues into that dormant canon, one that permeates the atmosphere long after the last note puts an abrupt end to these vibrations. After running the now-defunct free tape label Dadaist Tapes, Mertens comes with a release of his own: NO MATHEMATICS, the first record collab between KRAAK and Feeding Tube.

This entrancing debut sees shruti box and guitar conjoining to create circling ragas of solemn yet resounding force. Additional contributions from US composer and multi instrumentalist Nickolas Mohanna provide an orphic sheen to the whole, amplifying its psycho-sensorial energy through ringing zithers and pulsating electronics. In essence, NO MATHEMATICS fosters a portentousness that is tenuous and vibrant, completely in line with Mertens’ work so far and proving that the heart of Belgian dronevolk is alive and very much beating.
Have you noticed that Western music emphasises linear time? Melody is a continuous sequence of sounds. Harmony and rhythm follow a progression from beginning through climax and resolution. Is it possible to have an art that is based on non-linear time? Can we even experience non-linear time?

Efraín Rozas’ Still posed this question in the form of an installation made for quadraphonic sound, architecture and light. Still was first developed at Queenslab as part of a one-month residency with The Kitchen, New York City in April 2021. This album is a live, stereo room recording of Still as it was presented over three one-hour viewings.

Efraín Rozas is a Peruvian interdisciplinary artist working with Latin American music, robotics, sculpture and installation.
