Instantly gripping debut LP from Australian duo Heaven's Chair via their own newly formed imprint, H.C.L. They might be new names to us, but their sound is a sharply realised one that suggests this might not be the first rodeo for whoever is involved (listed here as Jake Norris and Miles Smith - yep, new to me too), splitting the difference between the kind of abstracted glassy ambience you might connect with the 3XL crew, greyscale beat-driven workouts that locate the crossover territory of Dedication era Zomby and Actress, and, right at the album's centre, a plainative compositional piece built around what i think is either harp or zither that immediately elevates the whole collection into a different space way beyond the club. Beautifully recorded and produced and defined by an overarching air of melancholy, Trust displays an act clearly in-tune with what else is happening at the bleeding edge of electronic music right now and adept enough to pull off a few different versions of it. That they've done this based in rural Victoria and not the midnight zones of Europe's more hip locales displays a set of very astute and intuitive instincts. As such, it's an impressive introduction I wouldn't be surprised to see travel far beyond the reach of their own small label.
