3XL label boss and all round major force in the Nu-Ambient scene makes his own play for the spotlight with a refreshingly edgy take on dissociative, decayed electronics. Like with Perila's most recent (which is still feeling a little too slept on for my liking), it appears as if a move, whether consciously or otherwise, is being made towards the crepuscular schema of post-industrial ambience and rendering if it the anti-light of a post-digital dystopia. Well, there's nothing new under the sun when it comes to existentialist gloom, and the dystopia of yesterday can easily resemble the dystopia of today if you're of the right maladjusted mindset. Which makes the likes of Coil, Zoviet France and the like an appealing and ever-enduring proposition for those with a head full of dread. Our Fantasy Complex finds that shared common ground in its confluence of broken down technology, ominous drone and event horizon synths that works just as well as a comment on these times as it does drug-warped inner space, familiar territory for anyone who's suffered through the several hundred pages of self-destructive 'transgression' that colour England's Hidden Reverse. Not exactly a wrecker of civilisation, Special Guest DJ nonetheless does a great job here in suggesting what the end of the world might sound like from the bottom of a k hole, which as far as I'm concerned, is infinitely more preferable than finding out for yourself. In its own unique way, a record that tells you which way the wind is now blowing...
