Moritani's work over the last four decades has consistently explored the outer limits of several intersecting genres, constructing a kind of post-humanist dialogue that challenges the relationship between technology, post-punk autodidactism and emotional expression. This mix appears to take a similar approach, using Sumako Matsui's station numbers recordings as its recurring basis and freewheels through various transgressive styles and performances, connecting lines where they perhaps weren't initially obvious, be that Johnny Thunders to The Crystals, Stockhausen to Molly Drake. Moritami cites nostalgia and postmodernism as key themes in selecting the tracks, which makes perfect sense given how the resultant mix spirals disorientingly through both the avant garde and the pop culture of the 20th century. It's a selection worthy of the highest praise, one i've found myself returning to repeatedly, always surprised by the art of having the familiar sit so comfortably alongside the alien. No surprise, really, since the music of Phew has always achieved that.
