World of Echo presents... Inner World 001 - Treader
Treader, the free jazz orientated imprint run by Ashley Wales and Jon Coxon, provide the inaugural installment in World of Echo's Inner World mix series. The intention of Inner World is to find alternative ways to share & support the artists & labels we love while the doors to our bricks & mortar shop remain closed during this pandemic. Treader has been a shop staple since our opening day (I even recall Mr Coxon purchasing a copy of 'Warm Leatherette' on that first day), so it seemed logical to ask them to open the series. Stream via Mixcloud.
About Treader
Ashley Wales and John Coxon, collectively Spring Heel Jack, have been making music together for over 25 years. Influenced initially by the emerging Jungle/Drum’n’Bass scene in the early 90s, they signed to Rough Trade/Island Records in 1994 and and made six albums for them. By 1999 they had turned their attentions away from purely electronic sounds and began working with free jazz musicians associated with Matthew Shipp’s Blue Series imprint in New York.
They made five albums for Thirsty Ear in this series, working with a host of US and European free players including William Parker, Roy Campbell, Matt Manieri, Evan Parker, Han Bennink, Wadada Leo Smith and John Tchicai.
By 2003, they had started their own label, Treader, to explore their increasing interest in the intersection between composed and improvised music.
